Vehicle Description Chevrolet celebrated the fifth model year anniversary of their legendary Corvette with an offering that featured new body panels, a restyled instrument panel and interior as well as, for the first time, quad headlights.
The results were apparently a hit with the motoring public with sales of the sporty two-seater from General Motors rose to 9,168 units from the just under 3,500 cars sold in 1957.
The 1958 Corvette also followed the then-current trend of offering considerably more chrome trim than previous models.
The 1958 model offered a choice of four optional 283 cubic inch powerplants over the standard 230 horsepower, 283 cubic inch unit and came standard with a three-speed manual transmission with optional four-speed manual or two-speed automatic.
There were also three optional rear axle ratios available allowing the buyer to create a much more performance-oriented vehicle than the base model.
A buyer could order carbureted engines with two four barrels displacing either 245 or 270 horsepower or two Rochester mechanical fuel-injected offerings featuring 250 and 290 horsepower.
Both fuel-injected engines were only available with manual transmissions.
There were numerous extra-cost options available for the 1958 Corvette.
In reality, the heater was an option but only about 1,150 Corvettes were built without a heater.
A soft convertible top was standard but a removeable auxiliary hardtop was a popular option.
A total of 5,607 hardtops were sold, but 2,215 buyers took advantage of exchanging the factory soft top for a hardtop so only about 3,400 cars were sold with both the convertible top and a hardtop.
1958 was also the only year between 1958 and 1962 where yellow was offered as a factory color option.
A total of 455 cars were built in Panama Yellow, with only 190 of them featuring the two-tone option with white coves.
Only the combination of Inca Silver and black coves (36 units) was more rare than the Panama Yellow and white combo.
